how to remove the cover off an oyster light
Oyster Lights July 30th, 2007Hi. I have moved into an apartment which has an oyster light fitting in the bathroom. The oyster light seems to be type that is screwed in and has no clips on the sides for easy removal. Its now time to replace the light bulb and i have no idea how to replace it. Do you have a step instructions that i can follow in order to change the bulb? Thanks for your help. Cristina

Dear Cristina
Many thanks for your enquiry
I am afraid that there are too many different oyster light fittings around to give you precise directions
My guess though if there are no clips visible on the oyster light that the cover either screws off (I would start with this if it was me) or just pulls off (it has spring loaded clips inside)
Just be very careful and always have your hands around the lens cover just in case it come off suddenly.
If it is a screw off type oyster light a small turn in one direct and it should come off and if it is the pull type it will probably just keep spinning without coming off and then you will know just to pull it off
This is a guide only as I obviously cannot see what oyster light fitting you are talking about! Good luck!
Just be sure to change the old bulb with a long life one so you dont need to worry about for a while
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Kind regards
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
I have the Studio Oyster Light Fittings in my apartment The cover is held in place with 3 clips). However, when I pull on the clips they do not move. How do I remove the cover?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.

I have the same problem as above. I can’t remove the cover of my oyster lights snd am about to resort to smashing it. Its a screw on one. Any suggestions to get it off?

I had the same problem but then discovered that one of the clips has a spring attached to it that you pull out! So if you find the clip that pulls out the light cover just slides off. well ours did anyway.

I just read Liz’s comment and removed mine. You can tell the spring-loaded clip because it has a screw on its back. Don’t try to bend the clip away. Just wiggle it and and pull it. It will give you enough room to slide the cover off.

Absolutely Brilliant, I had moved into a new house, and been messing with the oyster light for weeks, I was ready to kill it with a hammer, read these comments and simply twisted the frosted glass covering remove it (mine was a frosted glass covering with a brass outside base type, I was trying to screw the whole light fitting instead of just the frosted glass….. thank you so MUCH!!!!!

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou! I was starting to go mad with no light in the kitchen – and was going to ring the agent to ask permission to smash the cover! We have covers with 3 clips that I thought would just unclip, but no. Hmm? Screws? Nope! ….stumped! Read Liz and George’s comments above, wriggled each clip and the last one felt like it would give so kept wriggling and hey presto! Have now discovered lightglobe is a screw-type and I only have bayonet in the house, but at least the cover is off – YAY!

See. This is why I love the internet! You feel like a shell of a man because you cant change a light bulb but a quick google search shows you that you are not alone.
Thank you! I am now sitting in my lounge room with the lights on!

I’ve just managed to work out a third type that we have in the kitchen of our rental. It is 60cm or so wide (so quite big), brass outside rim with no clips, not screw in. The glass piece is actually plastic. When you push up there are three clips inside that keep the plastic down. To get the plastic out you need to push up, squeeze the sides of the plastic to bend it and then it slides out. This might help those where the above doesn’t work.

Thanks – was starting to panic as was turning it but it was just going around and was hoping it wasnt going to get loose and then fall off with someone standing underneath it! Pulled and with the help of a screw driver managed to push one of the clips in. It came off. Just watch out for old paint etc going in your eyes! Putting it back was just a matter of oushing till it clipped in.

Thanks to you all – it had me confused!
One thing to watch – mine had 3 screws, but I didn’t realise at first as there was no place to put a screw driver. It was only when I got right up on a ladder (and put my glasses on) that I could make out the thread on one screw that was out further. They turned easy enough once I could get my fingers onto them.
That’s another one for the internet!

Thank you. We moved into a new house which inevitably blew lights out and we never had oyster lights before. Wonderful to see again at night.

Thank you! Mine had three claws. Once I knew to look for the one which jiggled and to pull it out, the problem was solved. Internet triumphs again!
