I am thinking about installing new downlights myself
General Technical Stuff May 26th, 2009Hi Daniel
I am considering your new CFL downlights. Question: My downlight have 100mm Trim diameter and I guess about 70mm Hole diameter. How do you enlarge the existing hole to the 105mm for your downlight without making a major mess? Sorry if this question sounds dumb but I have never done this and no idea how to.
Regards
Hans

Hi Hans
I think you hit the nail on the head already. This job usually = MESS. Unfortunately a small saw and gyprock means fine dust everywhere.
Which ever day you do decide to embark on this project dont tell the wife what you are up to and send her out for a long day outing!
There are small saws (such a key hole saw) that eat through the gyprock pretty easily. Before you start cutting though you need to make sure that there arent any timber trusses or anything in the way in the direction you want to cut. Mark the holes and make sure there is no power on either just in case you cut through the wires!!! A good trick is to have the vacuum on in one hand and the saw in the other while you are cutting (assuming you dont have to get too high on the ladder of course)
The cutting is very easy though normally, But you shouldnt do the cut over of the power when changing the fittings. By law, this should only be done by a qualified electrician (see Here)
Let me know how you get on and take some pictures and I will add them to my help pages.
Kind regards
Daniel
