Replace the light globe in Lava Lamps
General Technical Stuff May 10th, 2007I have a Lava Lamp in which I need to replace the light globe. The instructions recommend R39 25watt which have been uanble to source. I can source a R39 30watt .. would the increased wattage be a danger to place in the lamp when instructions indicate use 25watt globe only?

I wouldn’t recommend putting in any bulb with a rated wattage higher than recommended wattage.
The stated recommended wattage is what the lamp has been designed and tested to. As the majority of the energy used is generating heat rather than light the fitting may melt or catch on fire. The increase in wattage is marginal and who knows – it may operate just fine but this would be the worst case scenario.
I have not come across a 25 watt R39 but a 25 watt R50 is available if it fits in (that is 50 mm diameter x 84mm high)

I buy my 25Watt E14′s from ‘Ideal Electrical Suppliers’ at 43-45 Upton Street, Bundall(8 stores on the Gold Coast). At over $7 they are expensive especially as the last one popped within 2 weeks in a glitter lamp. I have tried non reflector items but they don’t get the lamp hot enough to cause the glitter to rise to the top of the lamp. I googled ’25Watt E14 R39′ and they can be found on-line for as little as $2.95.
